Let's chat!
I seem to have one of those faces. The expression or softness that says, " I want to hear all about you, even though I don't know you from Adam."
I stopped for gas the other day with my two kids in tow. They stayed in the van, with the windows rolled down, because it was at least 90 degrees.
So I slide my debit card, push the little button that says regular, and right about the time I started to pump gas, the attendant walks over.
"You need some help?" Nope, I've got it, thank you. So instead of walking away, he proceeds to tell me about the gas war going on with the gas stations nearby. I don't mind the chatter, so I tell him that gas was $2.50 in Florida last week (we just got back from vacation.). From that statement, he begins to tell me about the time he went to Florida and his family almost bought a watermelon. But, they didn't, because it was $3.00. So when they got home, they bought one at Food City instead, because it was only $1.50. "Now, can you believe that watermelon was half the price here?" "Especially since the watermelons in Florida didn't have to travel near as far as the ones here!"
That's the way it goes I guess, as I'm putting the nozzle back and closing my gas cap. The kids are hanging out the window, because it's hot, and I'm trying to get into the car to start it.
"Did you know part of the old Jungle Book was filmed at Fall Creek Falls?" No, I didn't know that. "It sure was! The other part in India!" Wow, I said. I'll have to watch it and see if I can recognize it. "Make sure you watch the one that was on VHS!" "That's the one I have!" I assure him that that's exactly what I'll do and offer a "Have a good evening!" to him before I jump in the car before he starts to talk again.
I'm a firm believer that if someone wants to talk, it's because they just need someone to listen. And I guess I take a little bit of comfort knowing that people that don't know me, feel comfortable enough to talk to me. Even if it's about gas and cheap watermelons 😉
